During the mid-1800s, the American silver industry experienced a surge of innovation and artistic expression, driven by a growing middle class with a taste for luxury. Silversmiths dedicated themselves to crafting a wide array of new styles and patterns. In the 1860s and 1870s, silver flatware featuring portrait medallions—drawing inspiration from classical coins and cameos—became especially fashionable, with nearly every silversmith developing their own variation of the "medallion" motif. One such example is a ladle produced by the F. A. Durgin company of Saint Louis, Missouri, whose design closely resembles a medallion pattern first patented in 1862 by New York silversmith John R. Wendt. While not a direct imitation, Durgin's design shows clear awareness of Wendt's earlier work. A publication from 1878 titled A Tour of St. Louis praised Durgin for refining public taste in the decorative arts, noting that his workshop produced some of the finest solid silver items in the country and was favored by the most affluent citizens of the western states.
