Antique Gorham Sterling Silver Salt & Pepper Cellars – Set of 4 – 1886 – Colonial Pattern – Gilt Salt Interiors

An elegant and historically correct set of four antique sterling silver salt and pepper cellars by Gorham Manufacturing Company, dating to 1886, as confirmed by the Gorham year mark stamped on the underside of each piece.

This matched set reflects Gorham’s late-19th-century “Colonial” style, a designation commonly used by dealers for this restrained fluted form inspired by early American design.

Two of the cellars feature original gold-washed (gilt) interiors, intentionally made for salt, protecting the silver from corrosion. The remaining two were left ungilded for pepper, which does not react with silver—an authentic and correct period pairing, not a later mismatch.

Each cellar is marked STERLING 2155, bears Gorham hallmarks, and is monogrammed on the underside with elegant script initials "HAS."
