Rare Vintage Greek Orthodox Sterling Silver Icon of the Theotokos (Virgin Mary) and Christ Child
A beautiful handcrafted Byzantine-style Greek Orthodox icon featuring the Theotokos (Mother of God) holding the Christ Child beneath an intricately hand-worked tested sterling silver riza (icon cover).
The repoussé silver cover is unmarked but professionally tested as sterling silver and weighs an impressive 4.0 troy ounces, making this a substantial example rather than the thin silver-plated covers commonly found.
The silver riza is separate from its original wooden icon panel and retains the original perimeter tack holes. The original mounting tacks are no longer present, allowing the silver cover and painted icon to be displayed together or separately according to the collector's preference.
The hand-painted faces remain beautifully preserved beneath the silver cover and display the timeless devotional style associated with traditional Greek Orthodox iconography.

The sterling silver riza has not been permanently reattached to the wood panel. It retains the original mounting holes and displays beautifully with the original painted icon. Minor age-related wear, light surface scratches, and patina are consistent with decades of careful use and add to its authentic character.
