Vintage Sterling Handle Two-Tine Carving Fork with Guard – Unknown Maker & Pattern
An unusual and beautifully detailed vintage carving fork featuring a substantial sterling silver hollow handle, long two-tine fork, and protective carving guard.
The handle has an elegant sculptural design incorporating scrolling foliage, raised beadwork, and a distinctive pointed floral or acanthus-style terminal. The design has the substantial, architectural appearance associated with fine American silver flatware of the period.
The handle is clearly stamped:
STERLING HANDLE
No manufacturer's name or pattern designation is present. We have been unable to locate an exact pattern match in the major silver pattern references. The design bears some stylistic similarities to pieces produced by Frank M. Whiting & Co., but because the piece is unsigned, we are not attributing it to a particular maker.
This is a functional carving/serving utensil designed to hold meat securely while slicing. Its relatively compact proportions also make it well suited for steaks, smaller roasts, poultry, ham, and other carved meats.
